Applying For A Washington State Contractor License The Right Way!

The Washington state is more lenient when it comes to new contractors wishing to practice their skills and trade in their place. All contractors with valid licenses only have to register with the Washington Department of Labor and Industries at Contractor's Registration Section, P. O. Box 44450, Olympia, WA 98504-4450.
However, electricians and plumbers must apply for a Washington state contractor license before going into business.

Things you need to know:
· Before registering for a Washington state contractor license, you have to have a first license from the other state you are from.
· Specialty contractors applying for a Washington state contractor license may be disappointed since only two trades are allowed: electricians and plumbers.
· You will need to post a $12,000 bond as a general contractor or a $8,000 bond as a specialty contractor for your Washington state contractor license
· You have to provide proof of owning at least $50,000 in property damage insurance and $200,000 in public liability coverage.
· You will need to give the Department of Labor and Industries your IRS employer account number, employment security number, industrial insurance number and state revenue tax number. If you don't have any of the last three numbers mentioned, you can apply for a Washington unified Business Identifier.
· Once approved, your Washington state contractor license is good for two years.
· If you wish to get a specialty license, you'll have to get a training certificate to do any electrical construction in Washington.
The specialty Washington state contractor license
Electrical work in Washington requires a license. The Department issues five types of electrical licenses -- contractor, journeyman, administrator, specialty, and trainee.
Taking the electrical Washington state contractor license exam
In order to qualify for the specialty exam, you must submit proof of two years experience in that trade. And to qualify for the journeyman exam, 4 years of electrical installation experience with a minimum of 2 years in new commercial/industrial electrical installation is required.
The Washington state contractor license exams may cover the following topics:
· General journeyman electrician
· Signs
· Limited energy system
· Domestic well
· Residential
· Pump and irrigation
· HVAC/Refrigeration limited energy system
· Residential maintenance
· Non-residential lighting maintenance/retrofit
· Non-residential maintenance
· Door, gate and similar systems
Plumbing is the second specialty trade that Washington State allows to own a Washington state contractor license. To practice any installation, modification, or repair of potable water, liquid waste, and medical gas systems in a building in Washington, you must be first be certified by the Department of Labor and Industries.
The Department issues trainee, journeyman, and specialty/residential plumber certificates, and medical gas piping installer. Sine the certificate varies, you have to qualify and pass a written examination before getting a journeyman, specialty/residential plumber certificate
The qualifications for the Washington state contractor license examination includes supporting document of your past work experience based on the following hour requirements:
· Journeyman plumbers: 8,000 hours, where 4,000 must be of commercial or industrial work
· Specialty plumbers: 6,000 hours
